FILLMORE TEACHER in the SPOTLIGHT THIS WEEK:

Margaret "Maggie" Meenehan is Fillmore's beloved dance teacher and a certified Arts Specialist K-12. She holds a BS in Movement Education from George Washington University.  She has presented workshops and performances in Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, and locally at several Universities, Washington Project for the Arts, DC Space, Dance Place, Joy of Motion, Dance Arts, and Red Wiggler Farm. Ms Meenehan is a receipient of two Fulbright Scholarships to study the arts and cultures of Japan, Canada and Mexico, and has been awarded two DC Commission of the Arts & Humanities Grants in Education.  She was also awarded a merit scholarship to Duke University to work with the American Dance Festival.  We are extremely proud of Ms. Meenehan for her Rubenstein Award this year.  The award recognized five outstanding highly effective educators in the District of Columbia Public Schools.
The Partnership for 21st Century skills defines the 4 C's --creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication--as skills students need to succeed now and in their future lives as global citizens.  Involvement in a high quality arts education fosters and develops these skills.  At Fillmore we also believe in another C skill set -- connections -- being able to make connections among disciplines.  Students are studying patterns in every class (using patterns to make an abstract piece of art,  following a pattern for a dance combination, clapping a rhythm pattern in music),  learning arts vocabulary, and making cultural connections in music, dance, drama and art.  In addition, Fillmore teachers and classroom teachers are talking about how Fillmore can enhance  units of study.   We will be holding open house week October 21 through 27 at 10 am and 1 pm.  Plan to come on the day your child comes to see the 5 C's at work.
