Welcome to Band!
Dear Parents,
I know you are looking forward, as I am, to a much-anticipated year of discovery and exploration. I am very happy that your child has chosen Band this year.
Band/Winds is a yearlong course. This means that all students who sign up for this course will remain in my class for the entire year. The reason for this is to ensure that we have enough time to grasp the concepts necessary to become proficient on their instrument.
Commitment -
Art is fun and sprinkled with discipline can be a potent mixture. Unlike some other art forms, music must be practiced on a daily basis. More succinctly, in order to be successful at anything you must go over what you have learned.
I want every parent to know that each student must practice at least 4 days a week for 30 minutes a day. Anything less than this usually turns a fun experience into something they dread every Fillmore day. In order to avoid this you must schedule time for your child to practice so their experience can remain enjoyable.
Instruments -
We will spend the first weeks learning, and reviewing in some cases, basic theory. At the same time we will talk about which instruments the students may like and why. I will show videos with the instruments that will be taught this year (trumpet, clarinet, flute, sax for intermediates, and drum pad).
Every year the availability of instruments diminishes because of wear and tear. Therefore I am asking the parents who can afford to rent their child's instrument choice from a music store to do so. Another benefit to renting from a music store is that the quality of the instrument will be a bit better than those at Fillmore, and we will provide the textbook. I would be ever so grateful as this will help to ensure that all children who want to play will receive an instrument.
The cost for one-year rental at Fillmore is $45.00. This will include the cost of the book. Brand New!
I will teach a recorder class to 2nd graders at Hearst Elementary in which we will provide the recorders that will remain at Fillmore.
How to Practice -
Every student should practice 4 days each week for 25 minutes per session. I will instruct the students on practice procedure so there should be no confusion. Students who don?t practice usually feel left out in class which makes their Fillmore experience a difficult one each week. Remember, preparation is the first element of success. Please set a schedule for practice that they can adhere to so that their time at Fillmore can be an enjoyable one.
Performances -
All of their practicing will culminate into two major performances, one in December and another in May 2006. Both dates and concert halls TBA, and are mandatory for all students. Students who do not attend without an acceptable excuse will have their grades lowered. Every student wants to showcase their work, so we must see that we make every effort to provide this opportunity for them.
Achievement/Grades -
Grades will be based on how proficiently the student demonstrates proper embouchure (mouth position), hand/finger position, posture, tone production, and the preparation of music literature (home work).
Looking forward to a wonderful year filled with many high notes!
Sincerely,
Michael Bowie
